LEADERSHIP FOCUS FOR MAFFRA STUDENTS AT SNOWY CAMPUS

October 26, 2011

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has encouraged a group of Maffra Secondary College students to ‘make the most of a great opportunity’ as they attend the School for Student Leadership.

The Year 9 students are based at the Snowy River Campus in Marlo for the entire fourth term as part of a unique residential education experience.

The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects with the Maffra students living in a purpose-built facility with other Year 9s from across Victoria.

Mr Chester met with the group this week and emphasised the need for students to aim high.

“You should never sell yourself short and settle for second best,” Mr Chester told the students.

“This school provides a great opportunity for you to learn from your peers and the teachers and it’s up to you to make the most of it. There will be many challenges over the nine weeks of the camp but I have no doubt that this will be a life changing experience for every student.”

Mr Chester said the School for Student Leadership had three campuses in Marlo, Dinner Plain and Western Victoria and provided state school students with an incredible opportunity.

“I’ve visited the Marlo campus on several occasions and I’m constantly amazed by the growth and development in the program and the impact it has on the students,” Mr Chester said.

“It is a credit to the previous and current State Government that such a program exists in Victoria and we should be aiming to increase the number of campuses to allow more state school students to experience this form of learning.”
