Students from St Mary’s Primary School Bairnsdale received an advance lesson from their local MP ahead of a school trip to Canberra this week.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester spoke to the grade six class about Australia’s political system and how Federal Parliament work.

He also addressed the year level about leadership qualities and what it takes to be an effective leader in the school, in Gippsland and more widely.

Mr Chester said catching up with school students was one of the favourite parts of his job.

“I enjoy hearing about what issues catch the attention of school children and how they interpret what’s happening in the local community,” Mr Chester said.

“I strongly believe we all have role to creating aspiration amongst the next generation and making sure they know anything is possible if they work hard and chase their dreams.”
