Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has praised Year 5 and 6 students at St Mary’s Primary School in Maffra for their impressive understanding of Australian democracy and government.
Mr Chester visited the school to speak with students about civics, the role of Federal Parliament, how laws are made and how decisions in Canberra can affect local communities.
“I always look forward to visiting the Year 5 and 6 students at St Mary’s Primary School in Maffra,” Mr Chester said.
“The students are respectful, attentive and engaged, which is a credit to their teachers, Rebecca Stobie and Byron Sandeman.
“In fact, Bec and Byron might need to come to Canberra and give a few politicians a refresher on how the Australian Parliament and government actually work.”
During the visit, Mr Chester discussed his role and responsibilities as the Federal Member for Gippsland and answered questions from the students.
“We had a terrific discussion about Australian democracy, the role of Parliament, how laws are made and how decisions in Canberra can affect local communities,” Mr Chester said.
“The students asked thoughtful questions, listened carefully and weren’t afraid to challenge me with a few ideas of their own.
“Unfortunately, I also had to deliver a fairly large dose of disappointment to all 46 students when we got onto the subject of tax, and I explained that, yes, the government will eventually want a share of the money they earn.”
Mr Chester said school visits are among the most rewarding parts of representing Gippsland.
“It’s always encouraging to spend time with young Gippslanders who are interested in how our democracy works and willing to get involved in the conversation,” Mr Chester said.
