Big changes are underway at the site of a new lookout alongside the Princes Highway at Kalimna.

Steelwork for the modern, fully-accessible viewing platform has been delivered and installation of the major structural components has begun.

Local MP Darren Chester, who secured Federal Government funding for the project in March last year, has been disappointed by delays to the project.

“It’s taken way too long for my liking, but it’s good to see some major progress on the new lookout this past week,” Mr Chester said.

“We need to keep investing in new infrastructure on public land to encourage more people to stop and take a break in our region.

“After our community has endured such a terrible summer followed by the coronavirus lockdown, this progress on the lookout is welcome evidence of the work that’s been done to attract visitors back to East Gippsland.

“Our local tourism industry needs a boost and the viewing platform will give people another reason to come back to East Gippsland.”

The platform will provide a 270-degree view of the Gippsland Lakes, the Ninety Mile Beach and the ocean.

It is part of a $1.5 million investment comprising the construction of two viewing areas 400 metres apart: one by the highway and the other at Lookout Road, Jemmy’s Point. East Gippsland Shire Council is managing the project.

The creation of the viewing areas is funded with equal contributions from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and East Gippsland Shire Council.
