DANGEROUS SYRINGES AND NEEDLES FOUND IN LOCAL PARK

June 16, 2010

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has urged Latrobe Valley parents to remind their children about the dangers of discarded syringes and needles.

Mr Chester recently found five discarded syringes and needles whilst inspecting a public park at the old tennis courts in Shakespeare Street, Traralgon and has reported the matter to local police.

“I don’t want to scare people unnecessarily but it’s important that young children are made aware of the danger that discarded syringes and needles can present,” Mr Chester said.

“As parents we can’t be everywhere with our children and despite the fact that there are many safe disposal sites for used syringes in our communities it’s a fact that they aren’t always used for their purpose.

“We need to be teaching our children about the dangers that discarded syringes and needles present to their health and the risks they face should they touch them.

“Often discarded syringes and needles are quite difficult to see amongst long grass, leaves, dirt or sand so it’s important that children wear appropriate footwear when visiting public parks and gardens.

“Children must also be aware that if they find a syringe they can alert adults who can make sure that the item is disposed of properly.

“The last thing anyone wants is a needle stick injury to one of our local children playing in the park.”

Mr Chester has also urged anyone seeking assistance for drug related issues to contact DirectLine on 1800 888 236.

DirectLine is a central 24-hour, seven-day-a-week telephone counselling, information and referral service for anyone in Victoria with an alcohol or drug related concern.
