A $5000 scholarship to help regional students attend university has been launched for 2012 by The Nationals.

Gippsland students are being encouraged by local MPs Darren Chester and Tim Bull to apply to The Nationals Scholarship for Young Leaders.

The scholarship is open to students aged between 16 and 25 years, about to undertake their first year of university in 2012. The total value of the scholarship may be shared amongst one or more successful applicants.

Mr Chester said the scholarship would assist with the costs of undertaking tertiary education, a common barrier for students from regional areas.

“The Nationals recognise the barriers that exist for regional students wishing to undertake tertiary education,” Mr Chester said.

“We need to do more to help regional students reach their full potential. The Nationals Scholarship for Young Leaders is a very worthwhile opportunity and I’d encourage any East Gippsland students heading to university next year to apply.”

Selection criteria includes academic record, leadership qualities and community involvement. It is intended that the scholarship will be awarded to students who are intending to return to or remain in the country after their course and demonstrate a career commitment that will ultimately benefit regional Victoria.

Special consideration may be given to students in hardship situations.

Applications are open until February 24, 2012, and forms can be downloaded online from www.vic.nationals.org.au
