Community and sporting clubs across Gippsland are set to benefit from $290,000 in funding after the announcement of the successful applicants in the Volunteer Grants 2009 Program.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed the funding which will provide benefits to more than 90 groups across Gippsland.

Recipients of $5000 grants included the Traralgon South and District Association, Sale and District Adult Riding Club, University of the Third Age (U3A) Lakes Entrance, Yinnar South Pony Club, Churchill and District Lioness Club, No Boundaries Cricket in Maffra, Poppa Paul’s Ark in Port Albert and Yinnar Bowls and Recreation Club.

The Volunteer Grants program enables eligible community and sporting clubs to use the funding to purchase items that encourage volunteerism such as computers, printers, fridges or sporting equipment or for the reimbursement of fuel costs.

Mr Chester has again reiterated the need for the Government to work in partnership with regional communities to implement a small grants scheme for infrastructure projects such as upgrading community halls, improving sporting facilities or building playgrounds.

“The Government should be working with regional communities to develop a program that helps to get much-needed infrastructure projects off the ground,” Mr Chester said.

“If communities raise dollar-for-dollar funding for projects up to $20,000, they demonstrate that they are committed to the project and should be supported.

“I strongly advocate a low-paperwork scheme that allows not-for-profit groups to seek matching funds that can be quickly delivered for worthwhile community projects.”

Mr Chester said funding that assists community and sporting groups would in-turn help local businesses.

“The other winners from this round of funding will importantly be local businesses,” Mr Chester said.

“They will be able to provide these clubs with the required items ensuring that the money is kept within the local economy.”
