Food aficionados from across Gippsland are being encouraged to support their favourite fish and chip shop in a national competition to find Australia’s best.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is encouraging people across Gippsland to vote for their favourite fish and chip shop in the 2018 Australian Fish and Chips Awards.

“Gippsland is renowned for the high quality of its seafood and its fresh vegetables. It’s time we told the rest of Australia that our region is also home to the nation’s best fish and chips,” Mr Chester said.

“Like many Australians, people in Gippsland can be quite particular about the quality of their fish and chips and will be loyal to a shop they think sells the best tasting fish and chips.

“With access to some of Australia’s best seafood and fresh produce, Gippsland’s fish and chip shops have an unfair advantage over those elsewhere. It’s time we publicly acknowledged these great local businesses.

“If you love your local fish and chip shop, you should vote for it in this year’s Australian Fish and Chips Awards.”

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Anne Ruston launched the awards in Canberra.

“You would be stretched to find a town or city across the country where you couldn’t get a feed of fish and chips,” Minister Ruston said.

“The annual competition not only celebrates one of Australia’s family favourites, but also highlights the importance of supporting our world-class fishing industry.

“Buying local seafood supports our Aussie fishers and helps uphold our global status as having some of the freshest and most sustainable seafood in the world.”

All fish and chips will be rated against five criteria: taste, service, choice, information and labelling.

Voting opens August 1, with the winners announced on October 15. For details, visit www.fishandchipsawards.com.au.
