Work has begun near Buchan this week to construct a new two-lane concrete bridge over the Buchan River on Buchan-Orbost Road.

Tambo Constructions from Swan Reach was awarded the tender in November to replace the ageing, single lane, timber bridge for $1.83 million.

East Gippsland Shire Council, which is managing the project, expects the project to take around 30 weeks.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester secured Federal Government funding for the new bridge under round three of the Bridges Renewal Program to jointly fund the bridge replacement project with East Gippsland Shire Council.

“The Buchan River bridge is a vital connection between Orbost and Buchan. The new bridge will deliver better safety outcomes for the local farming community and ensure this important route between Orbost and Buchan remains open,” Mr Chester said.

“The old bridge has deteriorated and there are safety issues with the decking. I’m pleased to have worked closely with East Gippsland Shire Council to identify this bridge as a key bridge in need of replacement.”

East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Joe Rettino said a side track would be built to allow traffic to pass the construction site.

“The new structure will increase the bridge’s current load capacity and will make a noticeable difference in the day-to-day lives of residents,” Cr Rettino said.

“Motorists should be prepared for minor delays while the work is underway and give themselves extra time to reach their destination.”

The Buchan River bridge is the second bridge in East Gippsland to be funded under the Bridges Renewal Program.  The Lindenow-Glenaladale Road bridge at Woodglen has also received financial support from the Federal Government.
