People living and working in Morwell and Heyfield are a step closer to faster internet under the National Broadband Network (NBN), Gippsland MP Darren Chester has announced.

Construction work is underway on connecting 3900 premises in Morwell and 900 premises in Heyfield to Fibre-to-the-Node technology, which will improve the way people use the internet for work, education, or connecting with family and friends.

Mr Chester said the NBN would provide a range of economic and social benefits to residents in Heyfield.

“It is important that people living in regional areas, outside the major towns, have access to fast and reliable internet speeds,” he said.

“Residents and business owners have been patient as they have waited for improved internet services, and I am pleased to see that work has now started on making the NBN available.

“Examples of the benefits include enhanced software for local businesses, participating in online learning through virtual classrooms, or accessing government services and paying bills quickly and online.”

Mr Chester said the Coalition was rolling out high-speed broadband across Australia in the fastest and most affordable way.

“Our aim is to have every home and business in Australia to be able to connect to the NBN by 2020,” Mr Chester said.

“It is a lengthy process and not without its challenges, but the long-term benefits of better internet services are substantial.

“I thank all residents for their patience as the technology is gradually rolled out across Gippsland.”

As NBN construction is completed, residents and businesses will be able to sign up to an NBN plan with their chosen retail service provider, and will be supplied with a new modem to enable high-speed broadband.

A range of plans with various download quotas and speed tiers are available to suit consumer and business needs.
