Work is underway on the new sports pavilion in Churchill.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the Federal Government was providing $200,000 toward the project, which had been a priority for Latrobe Valley Hockey Association for several years.

Mr Chester said he was pleased to see a local construction company was undertaking the project.

“The works currently underway on the pavilion are being carried out by Rick Doultree Builders, a Traralgon-based business,” Mr Chester said.

The two-storey pavilion will include change facilities, a first aid room, universal accessible amenities, umpire change rooms, office and store rooms, multi-purpose meeting space, commercial kitchen and canteen and a spectator viewing area.

“This is a long-awaited project that will greatly improve the experience for Churchill hockey players and those who visit the town,” Mr Chester said.

“At present, players are getting changed in their cars and using a bus shelter on wet or windy days.

“This new pavilion will encourage more people to participate and make the sport more enjoyable for the players and all volunteers.”

The facility will also be used for soccer and sports science programs offered by Federation University.

The Latrobe Synthetic Sports Field Pavilion in Churchill is a $1.7 million project which has received funds from all three levels of government along with Federation University and Latrobe Valley Hockey Association.

The project is due to be completed by the end of August 2018.
