Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed a State Government funding breakthrough that will allow for the construction of the Yarram Childcare Hub.
Mr Chester said the $1.1 million announcement would provide a boost for Yarram.
“The project is critical to local families and the community’s ability to prosper and I commend Member for Gippsland South Peter Ryan and the State Government on providing such valuable support for the project,” Mr Chester said.
“It’s just a pity that the current Federal Government hasn’t lived up to its promise in 2007 to provide its share of the funding.”
Mr Chester has been working with the local community to source funding for the hub project since he was elected and has highlighted the project to State and Federal Government Ministers on several occasions.
His lobbying extended to State Minister for Children and Early Learning Childhood Development Wendy Lovell, who made the funding announcement today.
The Integrated Children’s Centre Grant which is being provided by the State Government brings total funding committed to the project to $3.1 million with Wellington Shire Council contributing $2 million.
Efforts are now underway to secure further funding to construct the $5.6 million facility which will offer a library, service centre and changerooms in addition to childcare facilities.
Mr Chester said the grant was the result of a tireless community effort to establish a childcare service for the Yarram community.
“The Yarram community has been working with all levels of government for a number of years to secure funding so that childcare services could be offered to local residents,” Mr Chester said.
“The project was started by a group of local mothers who were unable to accept employment in the community due to the lack of childcare.
“It has gone through comprehensive community consultation and brings together a range of services, many of which are currently unavailable within Yarram to offer maximum convenience, flexibility and choice for families.
“Today’s announcement is a huge step forward and will allow construction on the hub to begin.”
