Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has called on the ANZ Bank to review its announced closure of the Yarram branch.

“I am bitterly disappointed with this announcement, particularly given five local jobs will be gone from the town,” Mr Chester said.

“Banking services are essential for any regional town to thrive and the ANZ needs to honour its obligation to local customers and recognise the impacts its decision will have on the Yarram community andbroader Gippsland area.

“I strongly urge the ANZ to reconsider its position given the significant social and economic impacts this decision will have.”

Mr Chester has contacted ANZ Chief Executive Officer Shayne Elliot to relay the local community’s reliance on personal service, given the age and demographic of the community.

“My thoughts are particularly with those who work at the bank and are now having to rethink their future,” Mr Chester said.

“The ANZ should immediately review its decision and I am sure the Yarram community will stand united and show its support for those banks that do retain a commitment to the local community.”
