On Anzac Day, we pause to remember all Australians who have answered the call to defend our nation and our freedom.

Almost a million men and women have served our country. More than 100,000 men and women have given their lives. Many more have been wounded.

Anzac Day is an important moment when we can acknowledge the pain and suffering endured on our behalf and for future generations; and the sacrifice made by their families.

We pay tribute to those who forged the Anzac tradition, and to those who uphold it now.

During the past two years, in my former role as the Assistant Minister for Defence, I had the privilege of gaining a rare insight into our current Australian Defence Force and our veterans, as well as their families.

I have nothing but praise for their courage, their commitment and the sacrifice our service personnel are prepared to make for our country and for our future.

All of them serve with the same values of mateship and sacrifice as their Anzac forebears of 1915. They are an inspiration to us all.

I encourage Gippslanders to join in Anzac ceremonies and to reflect on all things great about our country.
