CARBON TAX REPEAL BILLS INTRODUCED TO PARLIAMENT

November 13, 2013

The introduction of legislation to repeal the carbon tax is the first step towards restoring job security and business confidence in the region according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester was present in the House of Representatives as Prime Minister Tony Abbott today kept his promise to begin repealing the tax as the Coalition’s first order of business.

He said Gippsland families and small businesses would welcome the move which would also ease cost of living pressures.

“Repealing the carbon tax provides greater stability and certainty for the Latrobe Valley and broader Gippsland community in the long-term,” Mr Chester said.

“Jobs will be more secure, there’ll be a reduction in cost of living pressures for households, business confidence will lift and farmers should see better value for money with their input costs.

“And while the tax will be repealed, existing household assistance measures which have already been provided will remain in place to continue to help families.”

Mr Chester said the Labor Party should support the removal of the tax.

“The carbon tax does nothing in terms of improving our local environment. Emissions continue to rise while households and businesses are slugged with increasing costs,” Mr Chester said.

“Labor cannot continue to stand in the way of the decision made by voters at the election to get rid of the carbon tax.

“It’s time for the Labor Party to recognise the mandate of the new government and pass the legislation that the Prime Minister has introduced.”
