Exceptional Circumstances (EC) drought assistance will end for farmers in the Central and East Gippsland Revised Area from April 30, 2011.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said while the news was not entirely unexpected he was disappointed with the decision and concerned about the impacts on local farming families.

“I’ve been working with the Victorian Farmers Federation, Rural Financial Counselling Service, Centrelink and farmers on the ground across the region and am not entirely surprised by the decision but it will make things difficult for many families,” Mr Chester said.

“The Minister has taken on board the recommendation from the National Rural Advisory Council (NRAC) and the decision to end EC would no doubt have been very lineball given the recovery has been patchy across the region.

“The decision affects more than 450 farming families and it is going to be very difficult for them to make the transition away from income support but I am hopeful that improved conditions and strong commodity prices will go some way towards assisting in their recovery.”

Mr Chester said the decision to end EC would have a negative impact on small businesses.

“There will be flow on impacts due to the decision that will be felt by some small businesses across the region,” Mr Chester said.

“It is important to remember that farmers don’t get rich off EC and without it some farmers will be forced to make tough decisions as they address issues of long-term viability.

“To help local farmers there is support available and I would encourage all farmers transitioning away from EC to speak to staff at Centrelink and the Rural Financial Counselling Service.”
