GAS CONVERSION REBATE CUT IN FEDERAL BUDGET

May 19, 2009

The Rudd Government will cut the rebate for LPG fuel conversions from $2000 to $1000 per vehicle over the next three years.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the decision that was announced in the Federal Budget would have a significant impact on motorists in regional areas.

“Country motorists tend to drive the longest distances and gain the most value from a conversion to LPG,” Mr Chester said.

“Given the cost savings for motorists and the environmental benefits associated with using LPG in cars, it is disappointing that the rebate has been targeted by the government.

“The Rudd Government has embarked on a reckless spending spree of one-off $900 cash bonuses and has racked up a $58 billion budget deficit, but then cuts back on programs which deliver practical benefits to people in regional areas.”

Under the changes announced in the budget, the rebate for post-factory conversions to LPG systems will be wound back from July 1 this year. It will be cut by $250 on July 1, 2009 before being reduced further in the following financial years.
