ITALIANS TAUGHT US MANY LESSONS: CHESTER

June 15, 2010

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says the Italian community has invigorated the Latrobe Valley with its passion for family life mixed with fine food, wine and dance.

During a speech to commemorate Italian National Day, Mr Chester congratulated the Italian Australian Coordinating Committee of Gippsland for bringing families together to celebrate Italian and Australian cultures.

“As we reflect on the contribution made to our community by the Italian families who moved here in the 1950s, it’s not just about spaghetti bolognaise, pizza and Robert Dipierdomenico!” Mr Chester said.

“If I had one word to describe the Italians I have met it would be passionate. They are passionate about their families, passionate about working hard to achieve prosperity, and passionate about life.

“Many of you have brought that passion to Australia and made an outstanding contribution to our community through your work on large projects like the Snowy Mountains Scheme and power stations, and also through your involvement in small business.

“Our community is a richer place because of the decision you made to settle in the Latrobe Valley and I join you in celebrating your national day with friendship and pride.”
