AQUADOME TO UNDERGO $415,000 EXPANSION

September 19, 2011

An increased number of larger group fitness classes will be held once work is completed on an expansion to the Lakes Entrance Aquadome.

The $415,000 expansion is a joint partnership between the Federal Government and East Gippsland Shire Council (EGSC). The Federal Government is committing funding to the project through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP).

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, State Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull and Mayor Cr Dick Ellis have been briefed on the project by EGSC Recreation Facilities Manager Tony Brett.

Plans are currently being finalised with work expected to begin soon. It is expected that the project will be completed by January 2012.

Mr Chester said he expects the project to benefit participants in group fitness classes as well as those who use the aquadome’s gymnasium.

“Group fitness classes need quite a bit of space given the exercises involved, equipment required and noise levels,” Mr Chester said.

“At the moment classes are held beside the gymnasium, which restricts the amount of space available for both activities and means the activities impact on each other.

“The expansion will see an increased number of group fitness classes held in a purpose-built area which will help to attract more users to the facility.”

Mr Bull said good quality sports facilities were essential to regional communities like Lakes Entrance.

“It’s important that we provide good facilities and space for people to get together and live healthy active lifestyles,” Mr Bull said.

“I am a strong believer in sport being one of the key underpinning activities of regional communities and this project will help more Lakes Entrance residents participate in exercise and fitness.

“By governments investing in quality sports facilities we are providing a variety of options to get more active more often.”
