LEAVE A LIGHT ON FOR AUSTRALIAN SERVICEMEN

June 9, 2010

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is urging Gippslanders to ‘leave a light on’ this Friday night for the two Australian servicemen killed in Afghanistan this week.

Mr Chester is supporting a campaign by South Gippsland resident Jean Hey who wants Australians to leave their front porch light on this Friday in a mark of respect for the Brisbane soldiers – Sappers Darren Smith and Jacob Moerland.

“Jean knows what it feels like to have someone you love serving overseas,” Mr Chester said.

“Her two children both serve in the army and she wants all Australians to show their support for the soldiers and their families at this tragic time.

“Our thoughts and our prayers are with the families and friends of Darren and Jacob and this is a simple mark of respect that all Australians can support.

“By leaving a light on, we can express our support for all Australian servicemen and women serving overseas in the hope that they return home safely as soon as possible.”
