THE NATIONALS VISIT MALLACOOTA P-12 COLLEGE

May 11, 2009

Students from Mallacoota P-12 College got a taste of political question time recently during a visit from The Nationals team of Gippsland MPs.

The Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester was accompanied by State Nationals Leader Peter Ryan; Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Peter Hall and Member for Morwell Russell Northe.

The team visited the classrooms of students across all year levels and were taken on a tour of the school grounds by Mallacoota P-12 College Principal, Tony Roberts.

Mr Chester said the team was impressed during the tour and said the school was a credit to the hard work being done by both staff and students.

“The staff and students at Mallacoota P-12 College should be commended for the condition of the school grounds and buildings,” Mr Chester said.

“A recent initiative at the school has ensured students assist in the creation of new landscaping amongst school buildings and it looks great.

“The program develops school pride amongst the students which is important within a small community like Mallacoota.”

Mr Chester said the students were more than happy to have local politicians in class to talk to them and help them with their maths work.

“They originally mistook us for Movie Directors so it was probably a let down for them to find out what we really did but we enjoyed the opportunity to tell them about life in Parliament,” Mr Chester said.

“A few of the students saw a good opportunity and got us to help out with some of their maths work.

“School visits are important chance for students to meet their local politicians and to gain a better understanding of the democratic system of government in Australia.”
