Gippsland Men’s Sheds will receive Federal Government funding to develop new programs and improve facilities for members.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said funding had been approved for Morwell, Yarram and Lakes Entrance Men’s Sheds under round 17 of the Government’s National Shed Development Program.

Morwell will receive $8500, Yarram $5000 and Lakes Entrance $6200.

“These Men’s Sheds, like others across Gippsland, offer support to local men, or just a bit of space and some friendly, easy-going company,” Mr Chester said.

“Traditionally, men have been renowned for putting off health checks and making their own wellbeing a low priority.

“However, men are now talking about their health more and more, and the men’s shed provides a safe and friendly environment for them to do so.

“Men’s Sheds are integral to the community and the benefits to men’s health are widely acknowledged.”

The Federal Government is investing a total of $5.1 million over three years to the national men’s sheds movement.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said feeling part of a social group was important to emotional and mental health.

“Every day Men’s Sheds across Australia and in the Gippsland provide men with an opportunity for companionship and support within their community,” Minister Hunt said.

The Men’s Shed grants program provides funding for health improvement activities, the purchase of tools and equipment, community projects and training, and for building maintenance and development.
