Morwell Football-Netball Club is on track to have its new netball courts ready for the first home game of the upcoming season.

The Gippsland League commences Good Friday, but Morwell will not play at home until round four on April 28 against Sale.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester was on site this week with Morwell netballers and representatives from Latrobe City Council, who advised plans were on track to have the new courts ready for April 28.

The Federal Government has committed $5 million to upgrade Morwell Recreation Reserve. The upgrade includes two new courts plus lighting, player boxes and a grandstand for spectators.

“There is always some inconvenience during the planning and construction for major projects like this, but by the end of the year Morwell will have one of the best netball facilities of all the football leagues,” Mr Chester said.

“The Federal Government has provided $5 million toward the courts and to provide the Morwell netballers with improved game day facilities for players and spectators.

“The additional lighting and player boxes will improve facilities for training and hopefully help the club to retain its current group of netballers and attract more players to the game in future.”

While the netball courts are hoped to be ready by April 28, the new pavilion and player amenities are a larger scale project and are not expected to be finished until the end of the 2018 season.

The upgrades to the Morwell Recreation Reserve are worth a total $9 million and also include improvements to the Keegan Street Reserve cricket field and the construction of a multi-use synthetic playing surface.

The recreation reserve upgrade is among a number of significant Federal Government infrastructure investments in Latrobe City, including the Traralgon-Morwell Shared Pathway, Latrobe performing art centre, Morwell CCTV camera installation and Churchill hockey club upgrades.
