A commemorative brass plaque will be installed by the cenotaph in Morwell to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

The plaque will sit alongside an older plaque that marks 100 years since the start of the Great War in 1915 and the landing of Australian troops at Gallipoli the following year.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who is the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, announced $3800 for Morwell RSL through the Federal Government’s Armistice Centenary Grants Program.

“Morwell RSL Sub-Branch is one of a number of community organisations across Gippsland to receive funding through the grants program,” Mr Chester said.

“Morwell RSL will also use the funding to hold a memorial service in November involving primary schools, RSL members and the local community. It will be an important event for the Morwell community to come together, acknowledge and reflect on this historic occasion.

“The plaque will be a permanent reminder for many years to come of what occurred at 11am on November 11, 1918.”

Meanwhile, Mr Chester also announced Morwell Lions Club would receive $3000 to hold a Centenary of ANZAC concert at Kernot Hall.

“This grants program is designed to support local projects and activities that appropriately mark 100 years since the end of the Great War,” Mr Chester said.

“Morwell RSL and Lions clubs are among nine local organisations to receive funding so far.

“I have been pleased by the local response to this grant program and hope the funding will help communities across Gippsland to mark this historic day in a way that is meaningful and memorable for everyone involved.”

Every electorate in Australia is eligible to receive up to $50,000 to commemorate Australia’s wartime history and the 100th anniversary of the Armistice under the grants program.
