CHESTER OFFICIALLY OPENS ROTARY ART SHOW

June 15, 2010

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has challenged more local residents to join community groups during his opening speech at the Rotary Club of Lakes Entrance annual art show.

While congratulating Rotarians for successfully hosting the art show for the 27th year, Mr Chester urged the audience to consider joining community and sporting groups throughout East Gippsland.

“We all have the skills and ability to help make a difference in our local communities by being part of organisations like Rotary,” Mr Chester said.

“Volunteering is the essence of community life and I challenge everyone to join a community or sporting group in 2010 and help do their little bit for our region.”

Mr Chester complimented the artists on a ‘stunning exhibition’ and admitted he wouldn’t like to judge the annual art show.

“Our artistic community has grown in importance over the past 20 years in East Gippsland and we now have many galleries which are a significant part of the tourism experience,” he said.

“I admire people who can take a blank canvas and create something magnificent, often inspired by our beautiful natural environment.

“It is a difficult job to choose winners in a competition like this where so many talented local artists have presented such a diverse range of works.

“I congratulate all the artists and I congratulate Lakes Entrance Rotary Club members for providing an opportunity to display this work…it is a credit to everyone involved.”
