Local men have been encouraged to be more proactive in looking after their health.

Speaking at a men’s health night in Bonang last week, Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said there was a temptation for busy rural people to neglect regular check-ups.

“Many men seem to think they need to soldier on when they would be better off seeking medical advice and getting on top of a problem before it gets out of hand,” Mr Chester said.

The men’s health night was organised by Orbost Regional Health Service and was well attended.

It featured guest speakers on issues such as alcohol use and managing stress.

Mr Chester spoke about the need for men to support each other particularly during difficult conditions on the land.

“During the drought there was a temptation for people to lock themselves away and worry about their problems rather than stay connected with their community,” Mr Chester said.

“One of the most important things we can do in rural and remote communities is to stay in touch with each other and help out our mates when they need a hand.”

The men’s health night was a chance for men to get together in a relaxed environment and receive some practical advice on how to look after their health.
