Community groups in Gippsland that support veterans’ welfare or honour Australia’s military history can now apply for Federal Government funding. The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester today encouraged groups across the region to apply for a grant from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to support eligible local projects and activities. “As a community, we deeply respect the service and sacrifice of the men and women who served in defence of our country,” Mr Chester said.“That’s why the Australian Government, through the department, has grant money available to local projects that support our past and present servicemen and women. “Any group can apply for a grant. Funding can be used for activities designed to improve the health and quality of life of our veterans, or commemorative projects honouring our military history. “Further funding is available for ex-service organisations to boost their capacity and help provide compensation and welfare assistance to veterans and their dependents.” During the 2016 election, the Coalition committed to providing $4 million over four years to support younger veterans, Mr Chester said. “As a result, a new grants program, Supporting Younger Veterans, will begin in the second half of this year for projects seeking to engage and involve our younger veterans, particularly with their transition to civilian life,” he said. “I encourage groups in Gippsland to look closely at the different grants available, determine whether they or their projects are eligible for funding, and then submit their application.” For more information, visit the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website at dva.gov.au/consultation-and-grants/grants.
