CLUBHOUSE UPGRADES NEEDED BEFORE STATE TITLES

July 27, 2009

The State and Federal Governments should move quickly to support an infrastructure upgrade at the Surf Life Saving Club in Lakes Entrance according to The Nationals Federal Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester.

Mr Chester, who is a member of the club, was a guest speaker at the annual presentation night on Saturday and expressed his support for the construction of the second stage of the clubhouse on the 90 Mile Beach.

“The importance of this club extends way beyond providing a life saving service and directly impacts on the social and economic life of East Gippsland,” Mr Chester said.

“Providing a patrolled beach is critical to attracting tourists to Lakes Entrance and the club provides outstanding leadership opportunities for young people.

“The very successful Nippers and Youth program teach young people the benefit of community service and help them to develop healthy habits for life.

“The club needs to finalise the clubhouse before it hosts next year’s State Junior and Senior Surf Life Saving Titles.”

Mr Chester also paid tribute to Surf Life Saving Lakes Entrance members from both past and present who contributed to the club recently winning Australian Surf Club of the Year for 2009.

“The club was formed more than 50 years ago and every member since that date has made a contribution to winning the Australian title earlier this year,” Mr Chester said.

“As current members we have benefited from the hard work of those who have gone before us and we have an obligation to make sure the club continues to exist and provide a vital service for generations to come.

“At a time when young people are often criticised for their behaviour I believe the volunteers at Surf Life Saving Lakes Entrance are setting a great example and deserve all the support that governments can provide to assist in their future development.”
