Federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull repeated his pledge to do ‘whatever it takes’ to help communities like Gippsland recover from the horrific bushfires.

Mr Turnbull toured the worst-affected areas of the region on Friday following an invitation from The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

“I thought it was important for Malcolm to come here and see the devastation the fires have caused to the lives of so many people,” Mr Chester said.

“He was overwhelmed by the extent of the damage in Callignee and Traralgon South and guaranteed locals that he would be doing whatever it takes to ensure the State and Federal Governments support fire victims and their communities.

“Given the widespread damage across Victoria, we need to make sure that the needs of Gippslanders do not fall through the cracks in the system and I’m working closely with the Prime Minister’s office to highlight any issues with the recovery effort.

“There have been so many heroes emerging from this tragedy – especially among the volunteers who have rallied to help those who have lost so much.”

Mr Turnbull met with fire relief agencies in Traralgon and also visited Boolarra where 30 homes were lost two weeks ago.

“I’m overwhelmed by the resilience being demonstrated by the volunteers who are helping families to recover,” Mr Turnbull said.

“There is an extraordinary strength in the community and it is up to governments to help people overcome this tragedy.”

Mr Chester said he had also invited Leader of The Nationals Warren Truss to visit the region later this week. Mr Truss will be in Traralgon and Yarram on Wednesday.
