A $560,000 project to rejuvenate the iconic Lakes Entrance bridge has been finished.

The safety railing on the Cunninghame Arm bridge has been replaced and lighting along the bridge upgraded.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the project was carried out by East Gippsland Shire Council and funded by the Federal Government.

“The bridge is an essential piece of community infrastructure, linking the foreshore area to the main beach,” Mr Chester said.

“It is also a landmark for locals and iconic photo spot for visitors to the region. At any time of the day or year, you will see people stopping along the bridge to enjoy the view.

“This project will ensure the ongoing safety for all who use it.”

Bairnsdale’s Eastern Roads and Bridges secured the contract to undertake the work.

East Gippsland Shire Council managed the project and contributed $36,000.

Mayor Joe Rettino said the landmark bridge was in need of attention.

“A reinforced concrete structure that could accommodate emergency service vehicles was built in 2008 in place of the old timber bridge,” Cr Rettino said.

“Since then, the rails had become corroded and unsightly, requiring maintenance and other remedial work.

“The old railing has now been replaced with stainless steel suited to a marine environment and new LED lighting has been installed.”
