The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has urged motorists to take care on the road when travelling through Gippsland this Easter.

Mr Chester made the appeal after a horrific weekend on roads across Victoria which has left the State’s road toll up 11 compared to the same time last year. He called on motorists to be patient and adhere to the speed limits when travelling on Gippsland roads.

“Easter is always a busy time of year throughout Gippsland with the high flow of tourists using the holiday period to visit the Gippsland Lakes and other local attractions,” Mr Chester said.

“It’s important for everyone to keep in mind that there is a need to be vigilant and careful with the extra traffic that will be on Gippsland roads this weekend.

“I urge all motorists to be patient, to allow extra time for their travel and to stick to the speed limits in place throughout the region.”

Mr Chester said he would continue his campaign for further funding to improve the road environment and help reduce the risk of road accidents in Gippsland.

“Several reports have found that improving the safety of the road environment is a proven measure to reducing the road toll,” Mr Chester said.

“Gippslanders deserve their fair share of government resources to improve local roads,” Mr Chester said.

“I will be continuing to lobby the State and Federal Government for funding to tackle the mammoth task of maintaining the vast road networks throughout the region.

“Fixing country roads, saves country lives.”
