The first phase of work to extend the Metung boardwalk will begin at the end of this month.

When finished in November, the existing boardwalk will extended by 325 metres to Chinaman’s Creek.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said an independent economic analysis had predicted the lengthened boardwalk would increase the time overnight and day visitors spent in Metung.

“The boardwalk gives visitors another activity to enjoy while they are in Metung. A walk to Chinaman’s Creek from the village alongside beautiful Bancroft Bay is a great way to spend an hour or so,” Mr Chester said.

“The finished boardwalk is expected to increase visitor expenditure by $4.6 million over five years. This project will also encourage further private sector investment in new or existing facilities that complement the current boating and accommodation businesses.”

The $1.12 million project is jointly funded by the Federal Government through its Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program, East Gippsland Shire Council and VicRoads.

The project, which includes replacing a retaining wall, was identified as one of the Metung community’s highest priorities in its community plan.

“The finished boardwalk will link the commercial and tourism areas in Metung village with the boating and accommodation hub further to the east along Bancroft Bay,” Mr Chester said.

“The boardwalk will be fully accessible, so everyone will be able to use the pathway, stop and take in the view and enjoy the beauty of one of Victoria’s premier natural attractions.

“It will be wonderful to have the project finished and ready for use this coming summer during the busy Christmas holidays.”
