Drivers around Australia are being urged by Driver Reviver Volunteers and the Toll Group to take a break this Easter to fight fatigue, a message backed by the Federal Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Darren Chester.

Toll today delivered cups and supplies to SES community volunteers in Stratford who will staff the Driver Reviver site over the Easter weekend from this Friday.

Stratford is one of 150 Driver Reviver sites around Australia receiving supplies from Toll for the Easter holidays. Drivers and their families are invited to stop for a cup of Bushells coffee or tea and an Arnott’s biscuit, and take a rest to break up their journeys.

Mr Chester had a coffee with local volunteers today and encouraged drivers to stay safe this Easter.

“Easter is a great time to get away with family and friends, especially around regional Australia, but it is important we ensure everyone arrives and gets home safely,” Mr Chester said.

“With more people on the roads this weekend I encourage everyone to be aware of the risk of fatigue while driving. One of the best ways to avoid fatigue is to pull over for a break at a Driver Reviver site.

“I’d also like to pay tribute to the volunteers from the SES and Lions Clubs across Australia who will give up their time over the Easter weekend to run the Driver Reviver sites – their efforts will make our roads safer.”

Toll spokesperson Andrew Ethell said that being involved as a contributor to Driver Reviver was consistent with its own rules and regulations around fatigue.

“Toll drivers spend more time on Australian roads than anyone else and we are acutely aware of the role fatigue plays in road safety. We deal with this every day, so it’s important to help Driver Reviver volunteers spread the message; fatigue on the roads can be fatal,” Mr Ethell said.

“We are delivering cups and supplies to sites across the country, so we urge drivers to take a break and have that coffee or tea to recharge the batteries, just as all of our drivers have scheduled breaks in their days.”

Driver Reviver has been in operation for more than 30 years and aims to cut fatigue on the roads at high risk holiday times when more people take longer drives. This Easter more than 150 sites across the country will be in operation reminding drivers to put safety first and take a break.

Stratford local site manager Steve Pendrick said his volunteers gladly give up their time to help promote safety.

“The local SES and Lions Club join forces at Stratford and not only is it a community message we all feel passionate about, but it’s also brilliant to meet people and talk about their holidays through Gippsland,” said Mr Pendrick.

“The same would be happening right across Australia at all the sites, people coming together for a common cause – road safety.”
