A new $1.9 million two-lane concrete bridge over the Buchan River on Buchan-Orbost Road has been officially opened today (Monday July 23).

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester secured Federal Government funding for the new bridge under round three of the Bridges Renewal Program to jointly fund the project with East Gippsland Shire Council.

“The Buchan River bridge is a vital connection between Orbost and Buchan,” Mr Chester said.

“The old bridge had deteriorated and there were safety issues with the decking.

“The new bridge will be able to carry B-double vehicles and will deliver better safety outcomes for the local farming community.

“I’m pleased to have worked closely with East Gippsland Shire Council to identify the old single-lane timber structure as a key bridge in need of replacement.”

The bridge, a two-lane steel and reinforced concrete structure, was designed by Chris O’Brien and Company. Tambo Constructions from Swan Reach secured the tender to undertake the construction work.

East Gippsland Shire Council managed the project, which got underway late last year and was completed before the end of winter.

Mayor Joe Rettino said the project went smoothly.

“I want to thank locals and other motorists who have been travelling around the construction site for their patience. Council is very pleased to report this project was completed five months ahead of schedule due to the efforts of our contractors and favourable weather,” Cr Rettino said.

“The new structure has increased the bridge’s current load capacity and will make a noticeable difference in the day-to-day lives of residents.”

The $2.4 million Lindenow-Glenaladale Road bridge at Woodglen, which was officially opened in May, was also funded under the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program.
