Gippslanders are being encouraged to apply for the 2020 Resilient Australia Awards celebrating those who have shown initiative to create more disaster resilient communities.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the current challenging fire season had shown Australia what Gippsland was made of.

“Gippslanders are tough and we’re resilient,” Mr Chester said.

“We have seen some of the worst disaster conditions but our communities are now working hard to build back better.

“The Resilient Australia Awards highlight achievements of resilience in times of disaster and are open to individuals, not for profit organisations, local and state government, schools and education institutions, research bodies and emergency services.”

The awards recognise outstanding achievements across six categories; community, business, local government, school and photography.

“Gippslanders can nominate an individual or group they believe deserves recognition for their efforts in strengthening community disaster resilience,’ Mr Chester said.

“I have no doubt Gippsland has many worthy recipients who are working hard for our community.

“This work can sometimes go unnoticed but the work is invaluable for protecting our communities and ensuring stronger resilience in the future,”

Submissions are open until May 18, 2020.
