Local MP Darren Chester is urging people to spend this coming Labour Day long weekend in Gippsland to help towns and businesses suffering due to the bushfires.

Mr Chester said this weekend was an ideal opportunity for people from Melbourne and elsewhere in Victoria to come to Gippsland to enjoy the extended break.

“There is so much to see and do in Gippsland and right now we need more visitors,” Mr Chester said.

“The March long weekend is normally a popular time to come to Gippsland to enjoy the lakes, beaches and high country because you can expect warm, sunny days.

“Our towns and businesses which rely heavily on tourism income are going to struggle to get back on their feet over the coming year or more.

“The tourism season had just begun when our visitors were told to leave East Gippsland due to the bushfires. We need to do what we can to draw people back to our region and encourage them to support our local businesses.

“The impact of the fires is being felt across Gippsland in areas far from the fire grounds.

“We need to get people back to towns like Yarram and Port Albert, as well as our towns in the high country, those near the Gippsland Lakes and popular spots along the Princes Highway to the New South Wales border.

“I want to encourage people to get out and explore a part of Gippsland they haven’t been to before, or to return to a place they know well and love to visit.

“There is a great variety of events being held this weekend including sporting and community events, plus a range of art exhibitions and live performances throughout the region. There’ll be lots of anglers around hoping to catch a fish worth $10,000 in the golden tag fishing competition.

“Gippsland is open for business and needs your support. This long weekend is a perfect time to come and visit us.

“Bring your empty esky and fill it up with goodies bought during your Gippsland getaway and know you are helping a mate.”
